Simona Halep Becomes 13th Player to Be Crowned as WTA Year-End World No.1

Romania’s Simona Halep has officially been announced as the 2017 WTA Year-End World No.1 player by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). The WTA rankings came into existence back in 1975 and only 13 players have been able to achieve this glory. She is also the first player from Romania to be named as the WTA Year-End World No.1. Speaking at the event organised by Dubai Duty Free, Colm McLoughlin, who is the Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, claimed that Simona Halep has been a worthy winner of the title after coming on the back of an incredible campaign.

Halep was able to reach the French Open final while also managing to win the trophy at Madrid. Only 25 players have been able to top the rankings and Halep achieve this historic moment in October 9, 2017. She was able to get this achievement after winning the China Open title. This was her 27th final in her WTA career.

One of the positive elements of Halep in the run up to this top ranking position is the consistency that she has displayed for the last few years. Apart from being able to defend the title at the Madrid Open, she was able to reach the French Open final at Roland Garros. Besides, Halep also experienced success at the likes of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, China Open, and Western & Southern Open this year. The successes have also earned her a qualification into the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore.

In terms of the disappointments, Halep would have liked to extend her Wimbledon 2017 run to be on the quarter-finals. She also came out of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and Rogers Cup at the semi-final stage. Halep first featured into the top 10 back in January 2014 and she has been able to maintain this position for the last 196 weeks.
