The Rome Masters, also known as the Italian Open is one of the most prestigious red clay tennis tournaments in the world, following the French Open, and takes place in the second week of May. It was combined in 2011, containing the ATP Masters 100 event for men and the WTA Premier 5 event for women. Its history goes back to 1930 when the first edition was held, not in Rome but in Milan, and was organized in various location until it permanently moved to Rome in 1987 where it has been played eversince. Best record of the tournament is Rafael Nadal's for men's singles, who won it eight times out of which 3 consecutives. He also holds the record for the most matches won in the tournament (55). The youngest champion was Bjorn Borg, in 1974, just a month before turning 18.
