Each year during early May, the Madrid Open takes places at the Caja Magica arena in Marid, Spain. While the tournament had a 6 years period of developing on indoor hardcourts, it's traditionally played on red clay surface to this day. It's an ATP Tour Masters 1000 event and a Premier Mandatory event on the WTA. In 2012 blue clay as used for the first time in professional tennis at the Madrid Open, but was ruled out afterwards. ATP tennis champion and billionaire Romanian businessman Ion Tiriac owns the tournament since 2009. Rafael Nadal holds the most records in the tournament, that he won 5 times out of eight played finals. Most finals (3) in the women's event were played by Romanian Simona Halep.
