England Football Resources

Wolverhampton Wanderers, or commonly known as Wolves, are a professional football club in the United Kingdom. The club was founded in 1877 – making it one of the oldest – and that they are based in West Midlands. The presence of the club in the formative years of the football division led to the team becoming one of the founding members for the football league back in 1888. Wolves have been able to live up to this stature by spending a huge chunk of their history in the top two divisions. They have spent only six seasons out of the top two English divisions.

The club had a major presence in European competitions and were even able to reach the quarter-finals of the European Cup back in 1959-60. However, they are yet to win a European title but they did come closest in 1972 when the team finished as the runner-up in the UEFA Cup. Wolves have enjoyed far greater success when it comes to domestic competitions, as they have won the FA Cup on four occasions and the Football League Cup on two occasions.

Domestic league competitions have provided far greater joy with the Wolves winning the likes of the first division, second division, and third division titles on numerous occasions. One of the latest successes for the team came in the form of the EFL Championship 2017-18 title. Notable players for the club include Andy Thomson, Billy Wright, Bill Slater, Steve Bull, Paul Ince, and Andy Gray. Stan Cullis is regarded as the most iconic manager for Wolves, as he led the club into three league titles along with FA Cup successes. The likes of Mick McCarthy, Dave Jones, and Nuno have taken Wolves into the top division under the regime.

The biggest rivals for Wolves all hail from the Midlands. West Brom and Aston Villa are seen as the two biggest rivals with games against the former known as the Black Country derby.
