Spanish Football Resources

Villarreal Club de Fútbol are a professional football team based in the city of Villarreal. The club is part of the La Liga – the highest tier of Spanish football. Named as the El Submarino Amarillo – or Yellow Submarines – due to the main colour of the club, Villarreal are not regarded in the same breath as the giants like Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, the club has been known to punch above their weights and most of the club’s recent history has been in the top division.

The club has enjoyed a lot of success in the last couple of decades after having not experienced the same for a major chunk of its history. The club was founded in 1923 and it is fast approaching the 100th year. The Estadio de la Cerámica is the home for the club and it has been so since 1925. The stadium has a capacity of just under 25,000 seats as it was renovated only in 2005.

The major honour for the club is finishing as the runner-up in the La Liga in the 2007-08 season. In fact, the club has not been able to win any league title up until now and this even includes the second division. The only title for the club came in the 1970 when they won the Tercera División, which is the fourth tier of Spanish football. On the European front, the UEFA Intertoto Cup has provided more success with the team winning the title in 2003 and 2004.

After having spent majority of their time in the lower leagues, Villarreal became an established player in the Spanish La Liga after their first promotion at the turn-of-the-century. Despite having been in existence for almost a century, the club has spent only 18 seasons in the top flight with majority of the campaigns spent in the Categorías Regionales.
