England Football Resources

Manchester City occupy the blue half of Manchester and are one of the two top teams in the city. Founded in 1880, this club is part of the English Premier League and has been in the top flight for the majority of its history. Initially, it was formed as the St. Mark’s before being branded as Manchester City in 1894. The best period in the club’s history came during the late 1960s when they managed to win a whole host of honours like the Championship, League Cup, FA Cup, and European Cup Winners’ Cup.

There have also been very desperate times for City as they have been relegated to the lower tiers on a couple of occasions. The early 1980s were a disappointing period for the club and they hit the lowest point in 1998 when they were relegated to the third tier. The turning point in the club’s history came in 2008 when they were purchased by Abu Dhabi United Group.

The fund’s poured in by the Middle East group led to a massive influx of top players and City have won two Premier League titles. Other domestic honours achieved by the club include seven first division titles. In terms of the cup competitions, City have ended up as five times winners of the FA Cup and the League Cup. Twice in history have Manchester City been able to pick up doubles in a campaign with the most high profile being the 2013-14 campaign – when the team managed to the Premier League and the League Cup.

Manchester City used to play at Maine Road since 1923, but the club moved to the City of Manchester stadium in 2003. The stadium holds just over 55,000 supporters. Also known as the Citizens or Sky Blues, Manchester City are in the top 10 clubs when it comes to annual turnover.
