The only European success for Lyon came in the form of the 1997 UEFA Intertoto Cup.

The club has witnessed some iconic players like Karim Benzema, Florent Malouda, Michael Essien, and Juninho grace the club at a different occasions. Alain Perrin was the first manager to lead Lyon two major success, as he produced a first double for the club. However, league titles started flying in under the time of Jacques Santini, Paul Le Guen, and Gérard Houllier.
The major rival for the club happens to be Saint-Étienne and matches between the two clubs are known as the Derby Rhône-Alpes. This rivalry has been in place since the 1960s.
