Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH, or popularly known as Bayer Leverkusen, are a German football club based in North Rhine-Westphalia. The club is currently part of the Bundesliga, which is the top division of German football. It was founded in 1904 by employees of a pharmaceutical company based in Leverkusen. Today, a number of divisions of Bayer Leverkusen – in basketball, athletics, and other sports – exist. The footballing division has the BayArena, which is a stadium with just over 30,200 capacity, as the home ground for the games.
Despite having been around for more than a decade, Bayer Leverkusen can count themselves as being extremely unlucky when it comes to Bundesliga titles. The club has finished as the runner-up on no less than five occasions and have never been able to win the top division title. Their only league success came in the form of a 1978-79 2. Bundesliga North title. The only major domestic title for the club was the DFB Pokal success in 1993. Even here, the club ended up as a runner-up on two occasions.
On the European front, there has been substantially greater success with Bayer Leverkusen lifting the UEFA Cup in the 1987-88 campaign. The team also went close to winning the Champions League in 2002. Stefan Kießling holds the record for making 439 appearances for the club, while Ulf Kirsten came up with 220 goals to top the charts in terms of goal scoring figures. Both players have been pillars for the club in the long history. Only four players have made more than 400 appearances for the club.
Theo Kirchberg and Christoph Daum are a few of the longest serving managers at Bayer Leverkusen, who tend to change their managers every couple of years. However, the club has gone through some iconic managers like Jupp Heynckes.
