Spanish Football Resources

Getafe Club de Fútbol, or commonly known as Getafe, are a Spanish football club based in the city of Getafe. Founded in 1983, they are among the recently established clubs in Spain and they are part of the La Liga, which is the top division of Spanish football. The original inception of the club dates back to 1946 and it was only in 1983 that they were reinstated. Despite being a relatively new club, Getafe spent more than a decade in the Spanish top division at the start of the century.

The Coliseum Alphonso Perez is the home ground for the club and it has a capacity of just under 17,400 spectators. The ground was inaugurated only in 1998. As a result, it is one of the smallest grounds amongst the top flight clubs in Spain. Leganes are the biggest rivals for Getafe as they are based close to the city. At the same time, Madrid clubs like Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are also regarded as rivals for Getafe.

In terms of trophies, Getafe have had very little joy. Apart from finishing as runner-up in back-to-back Copa del Rey campaigns, Getafe have been unable to make much of an impact in the top cup competitions. They did win the Segunda División B – Group 1 back in 1998-99 campaign. In total, Getafe have spent only 14 seasons in the top flight and 12 of those campaigns were from 2004 to 2016. After the La Liga, Getafe have spent their biggest part of their history (11 seasons) in the Segunda Division B.

Some of the famous coaches for the club include Pepe Mel, Luis Garcia, Michel, Michael Laudrup, and Bernd Schuster. Javier Casquero and Cosmin Contra are some of the popular names who have represented Getafe in the three decades of existence.
