Federer Expresses Surprise at the Nadal’s China Open Participation

Roger Federer claims that he is left surprised with Rafael Nadal taking part in the China Open and even going on to win the event. The Spaniard has just been enjoying a good campaign in 2017 after an injury hell over the last couple of years. After having recently won the US Open, Nadal took part in the China Open and even managed to win the event. As a result, he has been able to open up a 2370 point advantage over Roger Federer in the ATP world rankings. After having picked up two Grand Slam titles in 2017, Federer decided to skip the China Open in order to give him better rest ahead of the ATP Tour Finals.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming tournament, Federer says that it is a surprise that Nadal decided to take part in the event rather than giving himself a rest. More importantly, the Swiss is surprised by Nadal giving such a dedication to the event and going on to win the event by beating Nick Kyrgios. As a result, Nadal has been able to end his lack of a title at the China Open since 2005. The 16 time Grand Slam winner, though, has been going through a tough period with plenty of tennis action. Yet, it has helped him pick up great rewards after opening a sizeable advantage over Federer.

Nadal is also expected to take part in the Shanghai campaign, and Federer expects the Spaniard to make a major impact at the Masters 1000 event. Nadal will be going up against Jared Donaldson, while Federer will be facing either Jordan Thompson or Diego Schwartzman. The event already promises to be an exciting encounter with Nadal once again expected to push to the limits just as he did at the China Open. Meanwhile, Federer is looking to add to his two Grand Slam victories this season.
