Chelsea FC is an English club formed in 1905. The club is currently part of the English Premier League and have been extremely successful in the last two decades. Nicknamed as the ‘blues,’ the club has its home matches at the Stamford Bridge – a 40,000-plus seater stadium in the heart of London. As one of the incredibly successful English clubs, Chelsea can boast of titles like the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup amongst many others.
For long periods of its 100-year plus history, Chelsea has been a top-flight club, but there have been troubled periods for the team along the way. However, the turning point of the club’s history came in 2003 when Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich took over the reins. His lavish spending transformed Chelsea’s fortunes, as the club were able to attract a large contingent of quality players at extravagant fees. This set the tone for a trend across the globe, while Chelsea quickly became one of the established top teams in the business. After having picked up 27 major trophies in the history, few will be able to question the success achieved by the club.
The key time periods for the club have largely been in the last decade. The first Premier League title in the 2004-05 campaign happens to be Chelsea’s first major title after several decades. Since then, the club has shown no signs of slowing down and have been able to add several other titles. The biggest achievement in the club’s existence came in 2012 when they won the Champions League, but this is not the only European success for the club. Chelsea were winners in Europe even as far as in 1970-71 when they won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Some of the iconic players at the club happen to be John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Peter Bonetti, and Bobby Tambling.
