England Football Resources

Burnley have been a professional football club based in Lancashire, England. Founded in 1882, the club are also known as the Clarets. Burnley have a rich history in English football after having been one of the Football League founding members. The league was formed in 1888, and Burnley have lived up to their status as an important club by winning the top honours. The Clarets are also one of the few English clubs to have reached to the latter stages of the European Cup. Furthermore, the team has also been able to win all four top divisions in English football – becoming one of the five clubs to do so.

The Turf Moor has been the home grown for Burnley throughout its history. It took just a couple of months before Burnley started playing at this ground after their formation. At present, the Turf Moor holds a capacity of just under 22,000.

Majority of the successful Burnley came until the 1970s. The team managed to win the first division title on two occasions with the latest coming in 1959-60. There have been more successes in the lower division. The only FA Cup success for the club came in the 1913-14 campaign, but they have finished as runner-up on to more occasions. Burnley are yet to win the League Cup, but the team has come astonishingly close on four occasions. The biggest achievement for the team would be reaching the quarter-finals of the European Cup in the 1960-61 campaign.

Jerry Dawson is an iconic name at Burnley after having made 569 appearances for the team. George Beel’s record of 188 goals for the club stands since 1932. Beel also holds the record for the most number of league goals for Burnley. Harry Potts spent 12 years in the Burnley dugout, while Stan Ternent is the last of the long serving managers at the club after having been in charge for eight years.
