Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund, or also known as Borussia Dortmund, is a professional football club based in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The club was founded in 1909 and it is also one of the largest in German football with a membership count that runs beyond 140,000. As a result, Borussia Dortmund are the second biggest team in terms of membership. They play their football at the top of the German football team – Bundesliga. Over the years, the team has accumulated several trophies to win the title as one of the successful teams in Germany.

The first major success for Dortmund came in the form of the Bundesliga title in 1956. Seven other Bundesliga titles followed the club with the latest coming in the 2011-12 campaign. The club has also picked up for DFB Pokal titles. Surprisingly, Dortmund are one of the few German teams outside Bayern Munich to dominate European football, as they have picked up the UEFA Champions League title once, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup once, and Intercontinental Cup once. The team has the famous double of the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal title in the 2011-12 campaign.

The league titles amassed by Dortmund are a huge credit to their success in the last five decades, as they spend majority of the first five decades in the lower leagues. The club came to the top division only in the 1960s.

The Westfalenstadion is the home of Borussia Dortmund. This happens to be the seventh the stadium in Europe with a capacity of more than 81,000 spectators – due to Bundesliga regulations allowing fans to have stand up areas. However, international matches capacity go down to 65,000. The ground is also known as the Signal Iduna Park for sponsorship reasons.

Bayern Munich and Schalke are seen as the major arrivals for Dortmund.
